Sylvie Laliberté is a Montrealer who started her practice doing performance in 1985, and then extended it to video and writing. Her work has been presented in different national and international galleries. In her videos, the artist questions the frame, the gesture, the relationship of the body to the camera, autorepresentation, sense of space, fiction and parody. Narration, humour and the narrator’s role are essential elements of this video work that is meant to be subjective and post-feminist. The works of Sylvie Laliberté are a testimony that the critical dimension of feminism can be integrated to the creative process (without denying its specific nature) and allow the presence of an active, conscious and imaginative individual. Connections with the domestic environment and existential preoccupations are explored when the electronic medium integrates the performative capacities of the subject. To this day, the artist has published two books: Je suis formidable mais cela ne dure jamais très longtemps (2007) and Quand j’étais italienne (2013).
