A Living Library in Times of Pandemic

An idea of the Espace Critique Committee

Libraries are abundant places where books, people and ideas transact and transform through spatial and temporal encounters. New tracks are being dug in people's minds and intimate notes are deposited on the margins that come to life. Wanting to offer a hybrid collection of such paths and stories, DARE-DARE wishes to bring together in the form of a living library a collection of 7 artists ready to tell each other!

Inspired by the humorous twist of a proposal by Rebecca Schneider in an article on performance and new materialisms, this call encourages artists to transform themselves into living books that can be "borrowed" while working as a continuation of their own research. A loan program that allows the discovery of artists and their practices by experiencing them in an intimate way will be offered to the DARE-DARE community.

In this unprecedented context, borrowing an artist is both circumventing the isolation created by the almost exclusive technological relationship between the living subject and the screen object, but it is also approaching with a gaze criticizes the precarious economic condition of the artist of intervention and performance presumably reduced to participate in such measures. If the artist acquires there the double determination of subject and object, it is certain that the relations encouraged by such an initiative are real, situated and sensitive.

This call is a carte blanche with the sole objective of encouraging artists to present their current research, including for example the different processes, reflections and challenges that he or she encounters. It can also be an opportunity to look back on past projects or think about future projects with the support and kindness of the borrower.  The encounter can take the form of a walk, a small performance or urban intervention, or any other form with which the artist and the person feel comfortable, taking into account the current health restrictions. Artists will be remunerated at the rate of 545$ for their participation.

Send us your proposal in a form that suits you, paying attention to these points:

  • A title that indicates what type of book you will be (story, discussion, performance, etc.)
  • A short presentation of the proposed project, including the duration (approximately 30 minutes to 1h30)   and the number of times the artist wishes to be borrowed (we encourage two or three borrowings per artist.)
  • A short bio
  • One or more images of past projects accompanied by a short description
  • The language(s) of your "book"
