Denise Hawrysio's (London, England) project consists of a deconstruction of the architecture of the gallery space. She will build, all around the space, false walls that will run alongside those of the gallery to leave only a narrow corridor to circulate. She will intervene on these false walls by marking their surface with construction tools. DARE-DARE supports practices that energize the relationship to the site of intervention and its architecture. A chance for the Montreal public to (re)discover the striking approach of this artist who lives and works in England.
For her latest installation, Denise Hawrysio has built plaster walls inside half of the DARE-DARE space. These walls run closely alongside those of the gallery. A set is erected, like an invitation to re-enact the unfolding of a story. However, the strength of the work lies in the impossibility of solving this enigma through a simple narrative equation.
At the heart of Denise Hawrysio's approach lies a philosophical questioning of the concepts of transformation, art aesthetics and formal boundaries. There are also preoccupations with identity and the creative act. In his site-specific installations, the surface is used as an element to disrupt the relationship between image and viewer. This enables him to engage in a dialogue with the "scenic" and compartmentalized spaces of the gallery. At the same time, his work deals with the irremediably complex psychological tensions associated with artistic creation, and subjects such as reason and madness, trauma and revelation.
