Dis/location 3
Square Cabot
DARE-DARE’s Dis/location: projet d’articulation urbaine, part 3, takes shape in Cabot Square, in the midst of a densely populated area.
DARE-DARE’s Dis/location: projet d’articulation urbaine, part 3, takes shape in Cabot Square, in the midst of a densely populated area. Third in a series of makeshift quarters to house the centre, after Viger Square (2004-2006) and the park with no name (2006-2008), this urban park is located in a highly mobile, multi-ethnic neighbourhood at the junction of Ville-Marie and Westmount, next to the Southwest borough.
Ongoing sector-wide real estate demolitions and the steady closing of businesses, including the Montreal Forum, have transformed the area, destructuring and eroding its social fabric. Several groups with differing designs now debate the fate of the Cabot Square neighbourhood.
Over the years, DARE-DARE has acquired expertise in the dissemination of public and contextual art projects, always with an eye to the urban and social fabric, which constitute these art forms’ canvas. It has spurred a debate on art’s potential in the city and its influence on the daily lives of citizens. Run from two mobile offices in the heart of the city, this unusual street-level artist-run centre maintains a daily presence, encouraging research, experimentation, and collaboration. The centre is equally taking advantage of the new premises to inaugurate a documentation space dedicated to public art.
