La mémoire des objets

This work mainly presents a multitude of ceramic objects pinned to the wall of the gallery in the manner of a museum collection.

This new body of work mainly features a multitude of ceramic objects pinned to the gallery wall in the manner of a museum collection. The making of these objects was developed from a personal inventory of drawings and photographic images inspired by various moldings, artists' tools, archaeological objects and antique gilded painted frames. The installation thus stages the re-construction of paintings. In a way, this production is a collection of forms drawing on a cultural memory that encompasses several sources of reference, i.e. different places and times. This installation questions pictorial representation and its link with our memory of objects, and more specifically the relationship between the object on display and the object viewed in the context of art.

After graduating in art from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1984, Josée Cardin took part in the International Sculpture Symposium held at Place Ville-Marie in 1991. In 1994, she presented La mémoire des objets at DARE-DARE and Suites urbaines at the Centre des arts contemporains du Québec in Montreal.
