This project uncovers the hidden histories of the Sud-Ouest through family photographs, spanning the 1950s to the 1980s, which trace personal and collective narratives from a time when the artist's family lived in the area. Captured during a period of dynamic change, these images offer a window into the past, allowing Roberto Santaguida to explore the evolving character of the neighbourhood and its deeper implications.
More than keepsakes, these photographs reveal a profound connection to the local environment, documenting everyday moments and the transformations experienced over time. The project begins with nostalgia then moves past it, intertwining visual records with the stories of current residents, gathered through collaboration. By layering these perspectives, the work becomes a living document of the interplay between memory, place and time, offering reflections on the shifting nature of both personal and shared histories within the neighbourhood.
CONFLUENCES
Back for its third year, the CONFLUENCES residency, a DARE-DARE initiative, aims to welcome an artist from outside Montreal for an 8-week stay each year, enabling them to explore and get to know the Sud-Ouest as a place to recharge their batteries and create. The artist is housed in an apartment provided by artist Douglas Scholes, a long-standing partner of DARE-DARE.
CONFLUENCES is a three-year cycle of annual two-month residencies, during which a guest artist develops an original project nourished by the specific context of the neighboring areas hosting DARE-DARE. This initiative is made possible by the extraordinary support of the Sud-Ouest neighborhood.
