Programming

We would like to invite you to a round-table discussion to introduce and revisit the projects in our QU'EST-CE QUI VOUS TRAVERSE? program. These projects all share a participatory approach, prioritizing contact with the public and close, intimate relationships.

The event will focus on the practices of Camille Deslauriers Ménard and María Ezcurra, and our researcher-in-residence, Mariza Rosales Argonza, will act as moderator. All are warmly invited to question, discuss and comment in a relaxed atmosphere.

The other side of the mask
María Ezcurra
For over a year, the artist has been developing a series of masks that explore and reveal the conflict between our need for protection and the ability to transmit our own identity.

Trained as an actor, Camille Deslauriers Ménard became a storyteller as if she were clinging to a buoy. It was a question of survival, a breath of air in the icy water. She tours throughout Quebec with her colorful stories and adds puppetry, writing, directing and film to her passions. She also directed the play Perruche with the Théâtre de l'œil, in which she played the central role as a puppeteer. It was while accompanying neuroatypical artists that she began to ask herself questions about the accessibility of the arts and education. The desire to explore the five senses in relation to the spoken word gave her a thousand ideas and her research cycle began at the Écotone de Baobab - Création multidisciplinaire residency.

María Ezcurra is a Latina-Canadian artist and educator living in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. She has participated in numerous exhibits worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, the Carl Freedman Gallery in the UK, the Nuit Blanche in Toronto, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and OBORO. Maria has been the recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and the National System of Art Creators in Mexico and in 2019 was awarded the Prix de la Diversité en Arts Visuels by the Conseil des arts de Montréal. She obtained a PhD at in Art Education at Concordia University and has taught art in several universities and organizations in Mexico and Canada over the past 20 years. She has also developed and facilitated diverse public, participatory and community art projects in diverse contexts. She currently is a course lecturer at McGill and Concordia Universities. Her areas of research are participatory art practices; dress and gendered embodiment; memory, identity, belonging and immigration.

Born in Mexico and living in Montreal, Mariza Rosales Argonza is a visual artist, curator and independent researcher. She is a graduate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). University of Mexico (UNAM), she holds a master's degree in art history and a doctorate in modern and in modern and contemporary art. She has taught in both undergraduate and graduate programs. and graduate programs. Her research focuses on Chicano art, Latino-Quebec art and issues of equity. and equity issues from a decolonial perspective, she is interested in the relationships between art and society, particularly in intercultural societies. At Quebec, Mariza Rosales did a postdoctoral internship at UQAM. She was responsible for the scientific coordination of the Interuniversity Center for Studies on Letters, Arts and Traditions traditions (CELAT), from 2012 to 2015, and has published essays on art in an intercultural context intercultural context in various publications and specialized journals. In 2018 Mariza Rosales edited the book of essays entitled Vues transversales, panorama de la scène artistique latino- Quebec art scene (CIDIHCA-LatinArte). She has collaborated as a researcher and curator in various cultural organizations here and abroad. Currently, she is Project Manager - cultural diversity in the arts, by interim at the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
