MONTRÉAL HAVANA : rencontres en art actuel/encuentros de arte contemporaneo is an exchange project aiming to foster exhibits, production and dialogues between artists and cultural workers from Cuba and Montreal, which will unfold in two moments : in Montreal from May 14th to June 22nd and September 23rd to October 20th of 2019 and in Havana from October 31st to December 8th 2019, as part of the 500th year celebrations of Havana.

MONTRÉAL ~ HAVANA stems from the exchange between the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec (RCAAQ) and a network of many cuban curators and contemporary art organizations. The RCAAQ wished to allow many of its members to benefit from this up-and-coming network and offer them opportunities in creating long-term partnerships and artistic projects.

MONTRÉAL ~ HAVANA was created and supported by eight Montreal artist-run centres (Clark, DARE-DARE, Galerie B-312, Groupe Intervention Vidéo, Centrale Powerhouse, OBORO, Perte de Signal and Vidéographe.) which partnered to conceive and develop a large scale project which aims to strengthen ties with Cuba and to open a conversation between artistic practices in the two countries. This project was made possible by the collaboration of cuban partners : Artista x Artista, Avecez Art Space, Centre de Desarollo de las Artes Visuales and Galería Continua.

MONTRÉAL ~ HAVANA brings forward exhibits, residencies, outdoor screenings, video programs, networking, conversations, encounters and much more.

MONTRÉAL HAVANA is the meeting point of two islands !

Víctor Piverno is a young Cuban artist who graduated from the Superior Institute of Arts (ISA) in 2014 ; however he is already recognized in the national artistic panorama because of his particular way of working and the subjects he deals with. His sculptures and sound installations - singular media with which the artist works- establish a direct dialogue with nature and seek to evoke the past and explore the historical memory of contemporary individuals. Within the Cuban context, Piverno has managed to build his own language of great visual richness, which has placed him, without any doubt, among the most promising emerging artists of Cuba.
