Melissa Ng
Born in Mauritius of Chinese-Mauritian ethnicity, Melissa Ng grew up in a family that preserved certain values inherited from its Chinese ancestors, while being influenced by French and English colonial legacies. This cultural melting pot prompted her to question notions of identity and belonging, as a Mauritian from a Creole culture marked by colonization. Inspired by Édouard Glissant and his thoughts on wandering identity, she has developed an artistic approach that explores our attachment to the land and the quest for a symbolic “home”.
After college studies and two sabbatical years, Melissa chose Canada as her new home, where she obtained a Bachelor's degree in visual arts (specializing in drawing and painting) and a minor in music at the University of Ottawa, followed by training in teaching visual arts and music. This career path has enabled her to share her artistic passion as a teacher and encourage her students to explore their own artistic identity
Her artistic work draws on the ecosystems and landscapes of Mauritius and Canada, symbolizing the complexity of diasporic identity and the duality between rootedness and uprootedness. Through works such as Vers une Terre d'Ancrage, she seeks to offer a space of freedom where identity can flourish, freed from colonial assignations. Her ambition is to provoke a dialogue on memory and resilience, enabling spectators to re-imagine their own connection to the land and to history.
